Connected Mobility 101: What is it and what does it mean?

Connected Mobility is the term used to describe the ability of various modes of transport to be integrally connected to a seamless platform…

So that these disparate systems can communicate with each other, sharing data, and improving the efficiency and user experience of an entire transport mobility network. Think Smart Transport.

What’s more … It makes our cities smarter, more liveable, and ultimately more sustainable.

To fully grasp this, let’s start with a basic question …

What exactly is a connected vehicle?

Simply – it’s any vehicle that can connect to the internet.

It can share internet, WiFi, and data, with the devices of passengers and services, both inside and outside the car.

How does connected mobility technology work?

It can either connect through what’s known as

  1. “embedded technology’ – chipsets, and antenna built into new smart cars at manufacture, or
  2. “tethered technology” – retro-fitted technology which can connect through to vehicles already on the road through users’ smartphones.

Above ground, it’s great to know that all can connect via WiFi and mobile data.

Below ground in parking stations? well, that’s a different story.

Next week, I’ll dive into the typical smart features of a connected vehicle…

to give you a glimpse into the future of connected mobility.
