The Challenge of Airport Parking Allocation

Airport precincts often face complex challenges around parking allocation. The challenge around allocating suitable parking relates to equitably managing a limited number of parking spaces across multiple operational user groups. Given the evolving nature of modern airports in recent years, airport environments have expanded beyond transport terminals into dynamic, multi-functional precincts supporting airline operations, commercial offices, ground services, logistics providers, contractors, and public facilities. These environments operate across extended hours, often 24/7, requiring adaptable and responsive parking systems.

This operational complexity necessitates airport operators, commercial tenants, airline staff, contractors, and visitors to navigate the challenges of sharing parking spaces across different user groups and operational timeframes. Flexibility in parking arrangements becomes essential to accommodate varying shift schedules, peak flight periods, and differing access requirements throughout the day.

Parking allocation within airport environments can lead to congestion, operational inefficiencies, frustration, and increased costs for operators and tenants. Staff may struggle to access designated parking during critical shifts, while facilities managers encounter difficulties in efficiently and fairly managing high-demand parking resources. In time-sensitive aviation environments, these inefficiencies directly impact workforce productivity and overall operational performance.

At ThatsMySpot, we recognise the importance of delivering a seamless and controlled parking experience within complex, high-traffic environments. Our innovative solutions assist airport operators and tenants in optimising parking allocation, enhancing access control procedures, and improving overall parking management efficiency.

Through our expertise and technology, airport operators can address parking allocation challenges across operational and commercial zones, fostering a streamlined parking environment that supports workforce efficiency and elevates the overall airport experience.

The Parking Solution for Airport Operators

Case Study: Solving Airport Parking Allocation Challenges – Canberra Airport

Canberra Airport faced a unique challenge in managing parking allocation across its operational and commercial precincts. The site supports a diverse mix of airline staff, ground crews, logistics providers, commercial tenants, and administrative teams, all operating across varying schedules. Peak operational periods driven by flight schedules created fluctuating parking demand, while standard business hours brought a different pattern of usage.

To address this, we partnered with Canberra Airport to deliver a flexible parking system capable of adapting to shifting operational requirements. Our solution enabled clear allocation of designated parking bays for operational staff during critical shift periods, while allowing controlled access adjustments based on time zones and operational demands.

The site features a total of 80 parking bays in Constitution Place. Our remote control parking bollard technology enables automated parking space control and allocation, facilitating secure access for authorised users while allowing facilities teams to adjust parking zones efficiently as operational requirements change.

Our system allows individual authorised users to access their allocated parking bays securely for entry and exit. In addition, we implemented a programming functionality enabling facilities managers to operate groups of parking bollards simultaneously — securing operational zones during peak workforce hours or adjusting allocations to respond to fluctuating demand.

Our remote control parking bollard solution delivered a result for Canberra Airport which streamlined parking allocation across diverse operational use cases. This provided enhanced efficiency for facilities managers and improved certainty for operational staff.
